Posting a day late this week, but that’s OK. A much slower week than last week, with just seven recommendations this week versus an insane 21 last time around,, and things don’t really get started until Thursday.
Ran
- Thursday, 6:00 AM, Sundance Channel
- Akira Kurosawa’s take on King Lear, starring my favorite Japanese actor, Tatsuya Nakadai. Rather surreal, with a lot of influence from Noh theater.
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
- Thursday, 8:00 AM, HBO2
- Since the debate is now raging on whether this has been dethroned as the greatest Star Trek movie, a good chance to refresh your memory and at least make sure it’s a fair fight.
I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK
- Thursday, 10:20 AM, Sundance Channel
- A bizarre little romantic comedy out of South Korea. If you like the title, you’ll like the movie (and vice versa).
The Philadelphia Story
- Saturday, 1:45 AM, Turner Classic Movies
- Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart in one of the greatest romantic comedies ever made.
Rocky
- Saturday, 8:00 PM, Turner Classic Movies
- It’s Rocky; I can’t add anything here that you don’t already know.
Burn After Reading
- Saturday, 8:00 PM, HBO
- The latest from the Coen Brothers. We’ve seen bizarre performances from George Clooney (Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?), John Malkovitch (Being John Malkovitch) and Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Snatch), so I suppose what goes on in this movie shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
Fargo
- Saturday, 9:45 PM, IFC
- This should be starting about 10 minutes after Burn After Reading ends on HBO, so you can make it a Coen double feature. As my friend Anthony put it, “It’s understatedness cannot be overstated”.
